Collagen is more than just a buzz word. It’s the most common type of protein found in the human body. Collagen occurs naturally in many parts of your body, including your muscles, bones and skin. As a supplement, collagen comes from animal sources such as cows and pigs.
WHY DO WE NEED TO REPLACE COLLAGEN?
There’s a reason younger people have gorgeous skin; simply put, their bodies are producing more collagen. As you age, the amount of collagen your body produces decreases. Starting at age 20, you produce 1 percent less collagen each year. After menopause, women’s bodies make a significantly lower amount of collagen. Less collagen results in reduced elasticity and contributes to the visual appearance of fine lines, dryness and sagging, leading to fine lines, dryness, sagging—and yes, wrinkles.
MYTH: THERE’S NO SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE THAT COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTS WORK.
FACT: While there isn’t an abundance of research on drinking collagen for youthful skin, there have been some scientific studies with good results.
A 2014 study from the University of Kiel in Germany found that taking a specific collagen peptide improved skin elasticity for women ages 35 to 55. Another study conducted in 2014 in London found that using a specific collagen supplement helped reduce visible signs of aging. Additionally, a 2015 study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that oral collagen supplements increased skin moisture after eight weeks.
In the years to come, we can expect more research into the age-defying properties of collagen supplements.
MYTH: IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO SEE THE RESULTS OF TAKING COLLAGEN.
FACT: The scientific research on collagen shows that collagen supplements can begin to have a positive effect on the skin after just four weeks.
MYTH: ALL COLLAGEN SUPPLEMENTS TASTE BAD.
FACT: Many YANA users say they love our daily collagen shots, which taste like tangy fruit juice. However, if you’re not keen on it, it’s easy to add your daily collagen shot to your morning juice or smoothie to mask the flavor.
